Girona mobility study reveals high rates of traffic rule violations

A mobility study conducted by the RACC in Girona reveals significant non-compliance with traffic regulations among cyclists and electric scooter users. In the city's Barri Vell district, 95% of cyclists fail to dismount from their bicycles in areas where it is mandatory, such as Carrer de la Barca.

The report highlights broader safety concerns: 40% of cyclists reportedly ignore red lights, a figure that rises to 48% when using bike lanes on roadways. Additionally, 22% of users do not respect pedestrian crossings. Regarding electric scooters, the study found that 82% of users lack the required insurance, and 72% have not registered their vehicles with the DGT.

Demographically, 69% of users are under 40 years old. While 62% of riders feel vulnerable in traffic due to vans, trucks, and poorly parked cars, the city's shared bicycle service, Girocleta, received a positive rating of 7.1 out of 10. Girona Mayor Lluc Salellas stated he does not wish to prohibit cycling in the Barri Vell but will focus on awareness and sanctions to improve coexistence between cyclists and pedestrians.
