Girona FC faces crisis as Ukrainian players refuse to play

A major dispute has erupted at Girona FC involving Ukrainian internationals Viktor Tsygankov and Vladyslav Vanat. During the club's opening match in La Liga Hypermotion against Leganés, both players reportedly refused to enter the pitch despite being called upon by coach Quique Álvarez.

Tsygankov, who is under contract until June 2027, has expressed a desire to remain in the top flight following Girona's relegation to the second division. The situation escalated when the player published screenshots of internal club communications on social media, including messages regarding media protocols. In response, Girona FC has opened disciplinary proceedings against Tsygankov, stating his actions may constitute a breach of contractual obligations.

Celta de Vigo is reportedly interested in signing Tsygankov, though Girona is seeking a transfer fee in the region of €10 million to €15 million. While Tsygankov's refusal to play is seen as an attempt to force a move, the club maintains it will not allow him to leave for free. Vanat has also been linked to interest from Villarreal as the club manages the fallout from the incident.
