Gironde 2026 forest fires spark widespread relief operations

In the summer of 2026, a massive wave of forest fires swept across France, with the Gironde department experiencing the worst impact. More than 115,000 hectares burned nationwide and roughly 220,000 people were forced to leave their homes in Gironde alone. The blaze stretched from Cap Ferret to Bordeaux, threatening the metropolitan area and prompting evacuations.

Local authorities and volunteers mobilised quickly. Michaël Cenni, president of the Communauté de Communes du Fronsadais and mayor of Lugon, coordinated donation drives, transporting essential supplies such as hygiene products, water, and animal care kits to the Parc des Expositions de Bordeaux‑Lac. The residence of Le Tertre in Fronsac opened its doors to about forty evacuees, while additional collection points were set up in Libourne, Saint‑André de Cubzac and other towns. Numerous organisations, including Solidarités pompiers de France and the Oeuvre des Pupilles, appealed for public donations to support emergency shelters, psychological aid, and the longer‑term reconstruction of the affected communities.
