Gironde wildfires trigger tourism push and charity concert

In July 2026 a megafire swept through the Gironde department, burning about 42 000 ha, destroying 240 homes and threatening the Cap‑Ferret peninsula. The blaze prompted a coordinated response: firefighters from Morbihan were deployed, and the departmental fire chief Marc Vermeulen denied accusations that the village of Le Porge was abandoned.

To mitigate the economic fallout, local authorities launched the “Les vacances continuent ici” tourism campaign, stressing that more than 96 % of the region—including Bordeaux, the Médoc vineyards and the Arcachon basin—remains safe and open. The sector, worth €3.8 billion and supporting roughly 40 000 jobs, sought to reassure visitors after a sharp drop in bookings.

A charity concert organized by Julien Courbet and Pascal Obispo at Floirac’s Arkéa Arena sold out in hours, with over 10 000 tickets (later 10 100) pledged to the Fondation de France for fire victims. Municipal halls in Saint‑Médard‑en‑Jalles suffered damage during evacuations, highlighting the broader logistical challenges of the emergency response.
