French authorities ordered an additional 4,000 people to evacuate tourist sites along the Atlantic coast as a massive wildfire west of Bordeaux intensified. The blaze, now covering an area four times the size of Paris (about 1,160 sq km), has driven roughly 330,000 residents and vacationers from homes in France and Spain. A fleet of 23 planes and helicopters, increased from 18, dropped water and fire‑retardant, while 1,500 military personnel were deployed to protect strategic industrial sites, including rocket‑propellant factories.

The fire produced France’s first recorded pyrocumulonimbus cloud, generating lightning and wind that sparked new spot fires. At least three people, including two firefighters, have died, and more than 110 firefighters have been injured. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the evacuation as “very likely the largest civilian operation outside wartime,” and President Emmanuel Macron called the situation unprecedented. Spain is also battling several large blazes and has begun lifting evacuation orders for some towns as the heat wave persists.
