Gisella Bayona leaves journalism following family attacks

Ecuadorian journalist Gisella Bayona has announced her retirement from journalism following a series of personal attacks and allegations directed at her and her family. In a video released on September 2, 2026, Bayona stated that while she could endure personal criticism, she cannot continue her profession if it puts her family at risk.

The controversy follows comments made by President Daniel Noboa during a radio interview on August 28. Without naming her directly, Noboa alluded to journalists who criticize the government while maintaining links to public health system providers. He also suggested that the partners of such journalists were involved in irregularities within the electricity sector and linked them to former Vice President Jorge Glas.

Bayona denied all allegations, stating she has never been a state provider and has no business interests in the public health sector. She clarified that her criticisms regarding medicine shortages in public hospitals are motivated by patient welfare rather than commercial interests. She also rejected claims that her husband, José Alvear Campodónico, is involved in illegal activities related to the electricity sector.
