GIST selected for 11 billion KRW medical AI development project

Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) has been selected for a major government-funded project to develop next-generation medical artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP), the project includes 11 billion KRW in research and development funding over a period of five years and six months, ending in December 2031.

The initiative focuses on developing the ‘MIND’ (Medical INtelligence for Discovery, Diagnosis, and Daily care) framework, which integrates three distinct AI roles: ‘Scientist AI’ for analyzing complex biological data to identify disease mechanisms; ‘Clinician AI’ for assisting in diagnosis and predicting treatment responses; and ‘Home Doctor AI’ for monitoring long-term health signals via wearable devices and home sensors.

GIST will lead the project in collaboration with Sungkyunkwan University. To ensure practical application, the research team will partner with Samsung Medical Center, VUNO, and Neurophet for multi-center clinical validation and prototyping. A key objective is also the cultivation of independent junior researchers by providing them with GPU infrastructure, clinical data, and international research opportunities.
