Git 2.56.0 released with major performance gains and safer conflict resolution

The release of Git 2.56.0 introduces significant performance enhancements and safety features for developers, particularly those working with large-scale monorepos. A major highlight is the dramatic increase in speed for merge-base searches; in some testing scenarios, operations that previously took 0.68 seconds were reduced to 0.01 seconds, representing a speedup of up to 70 times.

To improve workflow safety, the update introduces the ‘git add --resolved’ command. This feature ensures that only files with resolved conflicts are staged, automatically aborting the process if leftover conflict markers are detected. This mechanism is designed to prevent accidental inclusion of incomplete code segments in the version history.

Other notable updates include: • Improved branch management with ‘git branch --delete-merged’ for easier cleanup. • Expanded capabilities for the ‘git refs’ command to manage references. • Enhanced repository maintenance and storage optimization through path-walk repacking. • Experimental improvements to ‘git history’ and ‘git replay’ commands. • Better error suggestions for common ‘git push’ mistakes and improved scalability for very large codebases.
