Git best practices and workflow strategies

Effective use of Git involves specific workflows designed to manage code changes and prevent repository clutter. One recommended method is forking, which creates a complete copy of a repository. This allows developers to maintain full control over branches, tags, and the merge process without affecting the main repository, thereby reducing conflicts when multiple people are working on the same project.

Another key strategy is the use of branching. By creating separate branches for specific features or issues, developers can commit code freely without risking the stability of the master branch. This approach allows for the immediate creation of new branches to address high-priority critical bugs without disrupting ongoing work.

For solo developers or small teams, a “broken branch” workflow—similar to the Linux development model—is suggested. In this model, developers work on private branches and only merge back into the master or a feature branch once the work is complete. This ensures that new features flow upstream while releasable software flows downstream to consumers.
