Gitanas Nausėda criticizes Lithuanian education system

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has criticized the Minister of Education, questioning whether she intends to solve systemic issues or merely simulate solutions. In a radio interview, Nausėda expressed concern over what he described as a “degrading” education system that fails to keep pace with modern times.

The President highlighted several critical issues, including the increasing administrative burden on teachers, which he noted often leads young educators to leave the profession. He also emphasized the need to fulfill the commitment to raise teacher salaries to 130 percent of the national average wage.

Regarding academic standards, Nausėda criticized the lack of requirements for students, stating that merely attending classes without measurable educational results is unacceptable and demotivating for high-achieving students. This follows a recent parliamentary decision to delay the implementation of mandatory minimum achievement thresholds for tenth-grade students until 2029.
