GitHub faces challenges with code volume and AI integration
GitHub is experiencing significant technical and structural shifts as the volume of code on the platform surges. According to a company blog post regarding a seven-hour outage, monthly commits increased from 1.4 billion in April to 2.9 billion in August, suggesting the platform is struggling under the increased load.
Concerns regarding data privacy have also emerged following Microsoft’s decision to move GitHub into its Core AI team. While GitHub has stated it will not use private repositories to train models, the company has acknowledged it will use code encountered while users are utilizing GitHub Copilot. This has led some developers to seek self-hosted alternatives to ensure code privacy and avoid potential AI training on their data.
