GitLab to implement new rate limits due to AI agent demand

GitLab is introducing new rate limits for its cloud-based DevOps platform to manage increasing infrastructure pressure caused by AI coding agents and automated development tools. The company expects traffic to increase several times over in 2026, necessitating these usage limits to maintain service performance.

The restrictions will apply to API traffic, web requests, and authenticated Git operations over HTTPS. The rollout will be phased: free-tier users and unauthenticated requests will be affected first, with changes taking effect on October 19, 2026. Testing windows for these groups are scheduled for October 7 and 14. Business customers on Premium and Ultimate plans will not see these modifications until January 2027.

Under the new policy, unauthenticated traffic will be limited to 60 requests per hour per IP address. Authenticated users on the Free plan will be allowed 5,000 requests per hour, while Premium and Ultimate subscribers will receive 15,000 and 25,000 requests per hour, respectively. GitLab noted that most developers' current usage falls within these new parameters and the changes are primarily intended to manage traffic from automated tools.
