Giulia Cecchettin case: forensic experts and new film project
The case of Giulia Cecchettin, a biomedical engineering student murdered in November 2023, continues to impact Italian society through both forensic investigations and cultural projects. Forensic entomologist Stefano Vanin has been appointed by the victim's family as a consultant to assist in the autopsy process. Vanin specializes in using insect activity to determine precise timelines and locations of death, a method previously used in high-profile Italian cases to reconstruct crime scenes.
In response to the tragedy, a film titled ‘Se domani non torno’, directed by Paola Randi, is in development and expected to be released by 2026. The project is based on the book ‘Cara Giulia’ by Marco Franzoso, written in collaboration with Giulia’s father, Gino Cecchettin. The book and subsequent film aim to address the roots of gender-based violence, including internalized patriarchy and victim-blaming. Proceeds from the book are intended to support the Fondazione Giulia Cecchettin, an organization established by her father to promote awareness and education against violence toward women.
