15‑year‑old Giulia Scimone killed in Messina motorcycle crash

Giulia Scimone, a 15‑year‑old student from Messina, died after being struck by a motorcycle that was performing a stunt in Torre Faro on the night of the incident. The rider, a young man in his late teens, was arrested and placed under house arrest on a charge of road homicide while investigators test for alcohol or drugs.

Mayor Federico Basile and school provveditore Leon Zingales publicly expressed their sorrow, and a peer named Giulia published a moving letter describing how she tried to help the victim. The tragedy adds to a series of recent fatal road accidents in Messina, where two teenagers have been killed within three weeks, despite a long‑term decline in overall traffic incidents. Nationwide, Italian road safety authorities reported 35 deaths in a recent weekend, including 11 victims under the age of 35, underscoring persistent safety concerns.

The incident has reignited calls for greater caution on Italian roads, especially among young drivers.
