Giurgiulești Port expansion: Moldova seeks to expropriate private land

The Moldovan government is planning to expropriate a 0.6-hectare private land plot near Giurgiulești to facilitate the expansion of the Giurgiulești International Free Port. The Public Property Agency has drafted a government decision to transfer this land to state ownership, noting that the plot was omitted from an initial list of 54 private lands totaling 35.07 hectares designated for the port's expansion.

Authorities state that acquiring this specific plot is essential for the full consolidation of the area intended for the port. While expropriation procedures for many other lots in the sector have already been finalized, the value of this particular plot and the subsequent compensation for the owner have not yet been determined. The Public Property Agency indicated that an evaluation cannot be conducted until legal access is granted or the owner provides consent.

Once the government approves the decision, the agency will organize an evaluation to establish the compensation amount, which will be paid from the state budget. The process is intended to follow the principle of fair and prior compensation, and the owner retains the right to contest the proposal through a commission involving local authorities and cadastral agencies.
