Giuseppe Conte insists on primary elections for progressive coalition

Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S), has expressed his firm support for holding primary elections to select a leader for the progressive coalition. Conte stated that there are no alternatives to this process, noting that if he were to accept a leadership appointment through any other method, his supporters would reject him.

Conte emphasized that he remains committed to the success of the progressive project regardless of the outcome. He pledged that the M5S would support whoever wins, including Elly Schlein, calling it “inconceivable cowardice” not to do so. He also noted that primaries must be carefully prepared as a structured process rather than a single-day event.

Regarding coalition dynamics, Conte criticized Matteo Renzi, suggesting that including him in the coalition is an error that causes the movement to lose votes. He argued that the movement led by Alessandro Onorato possesses greater expansion capabilities and could help recover abstaining voters.
