Giuseppe Conte Seeks Covid Inquiry Hearing, Offers to Resign From Committee
Former prime minister and M5S leader Giuseppe Conte sent a letter to Senate president Ignazio La Russa and Chamber president Lorenzo Fontana, copying commission chair Marco Lisei, to demand a date for a personal hearing before the parliamentary Covid‑19 inquiry commission. He wrote that, once a hearing date is set, he will submit his resignation from the commission immediately before the session, but expects to be reinstated afterward.
Conte complains that the commission chair has not formally responded to his earlier request made in October 2024 and that members of Fratelli d’Italia have publicly attacked him, accusing him of hiding information. He asks the parliamentary presidents to intervene so that procedural obstacles are removed and his right to be heard is guaranteed.
The letter highlights a procedural deadlock: the chair has only offered a generic comment, while Conte insists on a “free audition” and stresses that no formal response has been received, leaving the inquiry’s credibility in question.
