Giuseppe Conte seeks to lead progressive coalition after M5S Nova event

Following the conclusion of the Nova event, Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) leader Giuseppe Conte is positioning himself as the head of a progressive alternative in Italy. Party members and supporters have signaled a strong mandate for Conte to lead a coalition, with internal polls showing him holding a significant advantage over Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein in potential primary scenarios.

The Nova consultation revealed clear programmatic directions from the M5S base, particularly regarding foreign policy. A vast majority of participants voted against continued arms shipments to Ukraine, rejected European rearmament plans, and opposed increased military spending. Additionally, supporters expressed strong support for the primacy of international law and the recognition of the State of Palestine.

Deputy Ida Carmina emphasized that these positions represent a mandate from the citizens to pursue a platform focused on social justice, public healthcare, labor, and the environment, rather than traditional political logic.
