Indonesia receives first aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi
Indonesia has received its first aircraft carrier, the former Italian Navy vessel ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi, which arrived at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta on September 18, 2026. The vessel, which is 41 years old, was donated by the Italian government as part of enhanced defense cooperation.
Upon official handover, the ship is expected to be renamed KRI Sriwijaya. The Indonesian Navy plans to repurpose the carrier as a mobile command center and a platform for helicopters and drones, rather than a traditional fighter jet carrier. This shift is intended to support non-combat military operations, specifically disaster relief, humanitarian missions, and forest fire mitigation across the archipelago.
The acquisition has sparked debate regarding the high costs of modernization and retrofitting, which are estimated to range between $378 million and $909 million. Despite the vessel's age, the Indonesian Navy aims to extend its operational life for another 15 to 20 years through technical upgrades conducted by PT PAL and Fincantieri.
