Giuseppe Marcellino, 103, commemorates Battle of La Maddalena

Giuseppe Marcellino, aged 103, participated in the annual commemoration of the Battle of La Maddalena on September 13. As the last surviving participant of the 1943 expulsion of Nazi forces from the archipelago, Marcellino serves as a living link to the historical events of World War II.

During the conflict, following the armistice, Nazi forces attempted to occupy military structures in the archipelago to facilitate their retreat toward Corsica. Marcellino was among those who actively resisted and contributed to the definitive expulsion of the soldiers from the area.

In recognition of his role, the Mayor of La Maddalena, Fabio Lai, granted Marcellino honorary citizenship in 2022. During the solemn ceremony, Marcellino honored the memory of his fallen comrade, Renato Vasconi, by touching his name on the local war memorial.
