Giuseppe Marchioro, legendary Italian football coach, dies at 90

Giuseppe “Pippo” Marchioro died on 6 August 2026 in Cesena at the age of 90. He is remembered as one of Italy’s most influential coaches, best known for leading a modest Cesena side to a historic sixth‑place finish in Serie A and a first‑ever qualification for the UEFA Cup in the 1975‑76 season.

Marchioro also achieved multiple promotions with other clubs: he guided Como from Serie C1 to Serie B in consecutive seasons (1978‑79, 1979‑80), and later took Reggiana from Serie C1 to Serie B (1988‑89) and then to Serie A (1992‑93). His career included brief spells at Milan, Barletta, Foggia and other teams. The football community paid tribute, with SSC Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis and coach Massimiliano Allegri expressing condolences, and clubs such as Cesena, Reggiana and Como honoring his legacy.
