Giuseppe Modica exhibition opens at Mattatoio di Roma

The exhibition ‘Il fuoco nel mare’ (Fire in the Sea) by artist Giuseppe Modica has opened at the Mattatoio di Roma in Pavilion 9. The showcase, which runs until October 25, 2026, features 40 large-scale paintings created between 1997 and 2026.

Modica, a prominent figure in contemporary New Metaphysical art, draws inspiration from the Mediterranean and the writings of Leonardo Sciascia. The exhibition title references Sciascia’s 1975 story, which utilizes the legend of Colapesce to explore the paradox of Sicily being supported by columns amidst the fire of Mount Etna and the surrounding sea.

The collection focuses on conceptual themes rather than a strict chronological order, exploring the relationship between light, space, memory, and geometry. The works reflect the artist's observations of the Mediterranean landscape and the metaphorical connection between the sea and contemporary human tragedies.
