Giuseppe Remuzzi discusses lifestyle factors and gender advantages in longevity
Professor Giuseppe Remuzzi, director of the Mario Negri Institute, has discussed the primary factors contributing to human longevity. During a television appearance, Remuzzi noted that while genetics account for approximately 30% to 40% of lifespan, lifestyle and environment play a more decisive role.
Key factors identified include nutrition, physical movement, social relationships, and environmental quality. Remuzzi cited the Greek island of Icaria as a model for longevity, noting that its residents benefit from local diets, low stress levels, and active lifestyles.
Remuzzi also highlighted a significant gender disparity in extreme longevity. In Italy, out of 19 individuals who have reached the age of 110, 18 are women. He suggested that women possess a natural advantage in achieving such advanced ages.
