Giuseppe Tornatore warns of ethical boundaries for AI in Venice

At the Venice International Film Festival, director Giuseppe Tornatore expressed ethical concerns regarding the use of artificial intelligence in the audiovisual sector. Speaking at the ‘The Future of... Creativity’ symposium held at the Scuola Vecchia della Misericordia, Tornatore noted that while he is curious about AI, certain applications are unsettling.

He specifically cited the example of parents using technology to converse with their deceased child, describing it as a ‘mad promise of immortality’ and a boundary that should not be crossed. The symposium brought together a diverse group of leaders to discuss the future of creativity amidst technological shifts, including George Clooney, international jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal, composer Alexandre Desplat, and Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonca from the Vatican.
