Giuseppe Valditara defends school ban on burqa and niqab
Italian Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara has defended a government decree aimed at banning the burqa and niqab in schools, arguing that uncovered faces are a prerequisite for real integration. Valditara characterized the garments as symbols of a violent patriarchal mentality that denies women's personhood.
The Minister expressed concern regarding the phenomenon of ‘white flight,’ suggesting that if the presence of students who do not speak Italian is not kept at balanced levels, other students might leave. He warned that failing to address this could lead to the creation of ‘ghetto schools’ similar to the segregation seen in 1950s Alabama.
The proposed regulations will apply to students with European passports, though exceptions may be made for those who have already completed certain years of schooling and demonstrated proficiency in the Italian language. The policy has faced opposition from left-wing political figures, who have criticized the move as discriminatory.
