Gjert Ingebrigtsen denied accreditation for European Athletics Championships

The European Athletics Association has refused to grant Gjert Ingebrigtsen accreditation as the personal coach for Portugal's José Carlos Pinto at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, scheduled for 10–16 August. The decision cites compliance with World Athletics safeguarding rules and the association’s own regulations.

This marks the latest in a series of denials for Ingebrigtsen, who was also barred from the World Championships in 2022 and 2023, the 2022 European Championships, the 2024 Olympic Games and the 2025 World Championships. Although he was acquitted of abuse charges in a civil case, he received a 15‑day suspended sentence for a single incident of bodily harm involving his daughter.

Portugal’s federation had listed Ingebrigtsen as Pinto’s coach, but several athletes—including Narve Gilje Nordås, Per Svela and Canadian Kieran Lumb—ended their cooperation with him in July. Without accreditation, Ingebrigtsen will not be permitted in athlete warm‑up areas or other official zones during the championships. He declined to comment, and Pinto has not responded to inquiries.
