Gjirokastër Castle Museum mannequin sparks controversy

A new mannequin display intended to represent the historical figure Çerçiz Topulli at the Gjirokastër Castle Museum has sparked significant public debate in Albania. The figure, which features the hero's clothing, weapons, and binoculars, has been criticized by citizens and public figures for failing to capture his likeness and historical symbolism.

Critics argue that the execution of the mannequin is unflattering and has become an object of ridicule. Journalist and professor Mentor Kikia has strongly condemned the display, calling for its immediate removal and describing the figure as a “laughable character” rather than a respectful tribute. Kikia suggested that if the goal was merely to exhibit the hero's artifacts, a faceless mannequin would have been more appropriate than an attempt to recreate his physical appearance.

Public figures and citizens have formally appealed to the Ministry of Culture to intervene and remove the mannequin from the museum premises.
