Gjirokastra experiences significant tourism growth and economic boost

Gjirokastra is experiencing a significant surge in tourism, with more than 150,000 visitors recorded in the municipality since the beginning of the year. Mayor Flamur Golemi noted that interest has expanded beyond the historic city center to include surrounding villages, natural landscapes, and local traditions.

This influx is driving local economic growth by creating jobs and encouraging new businesses, such as guesthouses, restaurants, and service units in rural areas. The tourism boom is also benefiting sectors like agriculture, livestock, agro-processing, and traditional crafts. To support local artisans, the municipality has implemented fiscal incentives and fee waivers.

International visitors from the United States, France, Spain, and Italy have highlighted the city's unique appeal, specifically praising the Gjirokastra Castle, the historic architecture, and the traditional Albanian cuisine. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the city faces the ongoing challenge of balancing tourism development with the preservation of its historical identity and architectural integrity.
