Gök Medrese digital twin created using laser scanning and UAVs

Researchers at Sivas Cumhuriyet University have successfully created a high-precision 3D digital twin of the Gök Medrese, a historic Seljuk-era structure in Sivas, Turkey. Built in 1271 by architect Konyalı Kaluyan, the site is often referred to as the ‘Blue Medrese’ due to its distinctive blue tiles.

The project, conducted by graduate student İlayda Emen under the supervision of Professor Tarık Türk, utilized a combination of low-cost mobile laser scanning and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies. This integrated approach allowed for the rapid documentation of the site, completing exterior scans in approximately two hours and semi-open interior measurements in just 25 minutes.

Professor Türk noted that the method distinguishes itself from existing literature through its absolute positional accuracy, low cost, and speed. The digital twin serves as a vital scientific tool for preserving the monument for future generations and provides a foundational resource for potential restoration efforts in the event of natural disasters or other damage.
