Gökhan Uygur supports family despite albinism and visual impairment

Gökhan Uygur, a 34-year-old man living with albinism and a 60 percent visual impairment, is the primary provider for his family in Aksaray, Turkey. His condition, caused by a lack of melanin pigment, affects his ability to see distant objects and tolerate sunlight.

Uygur’s family members share similar challenges; his father, Cuma, and his brother, Muhammet, also have albinism, while his mother, Cemile, is 60 percent visually impaired. Currently employed at a specialized milk factory under a disability quota, Uygur supports his parents and manages his household.

Uygur expressed gratitude for his circumstances, noting that his vision continues to decline with age. He expects to qualify for disability retirement in 2027 after completing 15 years of social security coverage. He also shared hopes for his brother, a physical education graduate, to secure a teaching position through the Disabled Public Personnel Selection Examination (EKPSS) in the future.
