GKIDS acquires North American rights to ‘5 Centimeters Per Second’ live-action film

GKIDS has acquired the North American rights to the live-action adaptation of ‘5 Centimeters Per Second’, based on the original animated feature by director Makoto Shinkai. The announcement was made during the Anime NYC 2026 industry panel.

Directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama, the film stars Hokuto Matsumura, Mitsuki Takahata, and Nana Mori. The production has already garnered recognition in Japan, receiving four nominations for the 2026 Awards of the Japanese Academy, including Best Actor for Matsumura.

GKIDS intends to release further details regarding North American theatrical and home entertainment plans later this year.
