GKV-Spitzenverband head opposes forced health insurance mergers

Oliver Blatt, Chairman of the GKV-Spitzenverband, has rejected calls for a politically mandated reduction in the number of statutory health insurance funds in Germany. Blatt argued that forcing a specific number of insurers would not improve the efficiency of the healthcare system, noting that administrative costs are already low at approximately four percent due to competition.

Federal Health Minister Carsten Linnemann (CDU) has previously advocated for a significant reduction in the number of funds, which previously exceeded 90. Linnemann suggested that ten insurance funds might be sufficient and proposed a minimum membership size of 200,000 to 250,000 as a potential prerequisite for mergers.

A health finance commission is expected to submit its final report in December. Linnemann indicated that reforms based on these findings would be pursued next year.
