Glacial flood in Nepal and China leaves hundreds dead and thousands missing

A massive Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) at the border of Nepal and China has resulted in significant casualties and international concern. Official reports from the Nepalese government indicate that approximately 392 people have died across Nepal and Tibet, with roughly 1,400 individuals still missing. The disaster has an international dimension, with 596 foreign citizens from 33 different countries reported missing, including nationals from India, China, the United States, Ukraine, Malaysia, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

Scientists warn that GLOFs, also known as Jökulhlaups, occur when water pressure breaks natural dams of ice, rock, or sediment, releasing massive volumes of water, mud, and debris. While the Himalayas are highly vulnerable, similar risks exist in the Andes mountains. In Argentina, accelerated glacier retreat is creating unstable lakes. Historical precedents in Argentina include the 2005 collapse of Laguna de los Erizos in San Juan, which released 32 million cubic meters of water in 67 minutes, and documented events in the Los Glaciares National Park.
