Bhutan glacial lake outburst triggers flood alerts in India

A glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) at Shintaphu Lake in Bhutan’s Gasa district has triggered emergency flood alerts across parts of Assam and West Bengal, India. The incident, reported on the evening of 29 October 2026, involved a sudden release of water from the high-altitude lake near Wakila Mountain.

In Bhutan, the outburst damaged a section of the road serving the remote Laya region, making it impassable. Authorities in Bhutan have activated warning sirens and moved residents in vulnerable areas to safer locations. No casualties have been reported in Bhutan as of 30 October.

In India, the Government of India issued a special advisory warning of sudden water level rises along the Sankosh River, which receives water from the Punatsangchhu River in Bhutan. High alerts have been issued for Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Darjeeling in West Bengal, as well as the Dhubri district in Assam.

In West Bengal’s Alipurduar district, approximately 10,000 people have been relocated to safer ground, with thousands being housed in school buildings used as relief centers. Emergency response teams, including the NDRF and SDRF, have been deployed to manage the situation and monitor river levels.
