Glacial lakes in Spain offer unique geological and climatic insights
Spain features significant glacial landscapes, including the Lago de Sanabria in Zamora and the Laguna Negra in Soria.
The Lago de Sanabria, located in the Sierra de Segundera within the Tera River basin, is the largest glacial lake in the Iberian Peninsula. Covering over 360 hectares with a maximum depth of nearly 53 meters, it was formed during the Würm glaciation. According to the Instituto Geológico y Minero de España (IGME-CSIC), the site serves as a primary paleoclimatic laboratory, preserving geological records of Pleistocene climate dynamics through the erosion and movement of ice masses that once exceeded 20 kilometers in length.
In Soria, the Laguna Negra, situated in the Urbión Glacial Cirque, is characterized by its dark water. While local legends and literature once suggested the color was due to extreme depth, scientific explanation attributes the appearance to geological and biological factors. The lake is surrounded by high sandstone walls that cast constant shadows, reducing sunlight. Additionally, the decomposition of organic matter from surrounding pine forests releases tannins and humic compounds into the water, which, combined with a dark, muddy bottom, creates its distinctive black appearance.
