Glacier resorts offer early autumn skiing opportunities

Skiing in the autumn is primarily possible at high-altitude glacier resorts where snow and ice remain present even before the main winter season begins. While most ski areas do not open until December when natural snow cover is sufficient, glaciers located between 2,500 and 3,000 meters often provide early access to limited slopes.

In Austria, notable locations include the Hintertuxer Gletscher, which is open nearly year-round, as well as the Stubai Glacier, Sölden, Pitztal, Kaunertal, Mölltaler Gletscher, and Kitzsteinhorn. Sölden, for instance, has already opened its glacier season, with specific lifts and pistes operational.

European options also include Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Tignes, and Les 2 Alpes in Switzerland and France. Travelers should note that autumn skiing is typically restricted to the glacier itself, often featuring blue and red runs, and does not include full access to the entire mountain or descents into the valleys. Because opening dates and available slopes depend on temperature and snowfall, checking official resort websites before booking is recommended.
