Glaciers in Fuscher Tal show significant retreat

Recent aerial documentation in the Fuscher Tal, located near the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, reveals significant ice retreat across seven glaciers in the Salzburg region. Comparisons between current footage from September 2026 and archival images from 2021, 2023, and 2025 highlight the accelerating loss of glacial mass.

Glaciologist Andrea Fischer from the Academy of Sciences in Innsbruck notes that the shrinkage is now most visible at the upper edges of the glaciers, where the feeding areas are being lost. Specific observations include the Walcher Kees, which has completely melted in the area below the Wiesbachschartl, and the Sandbodenkees, which has lost the ice bulge previously seen on the summit ridge of the Wiesbachhorn.

Other affected areas include the Teufelsmühlkees, where a prominent icefall has nearly flattened, and the Boggeneikees, described by Fischer as a textbook example of a glacier sustained by icefalls. The documentation shows a consistent pattern of diminishing ice thickness and extent across the northern ramp of the Hohe Tauern mountains.
