Gladbeck Fire Department tests automated emergency response drone

The Gladbeck Fire Department in Germany is conducting a three-month trial of an automated drone designed to provide real-time aerial intelligence during emergency responses. The drone is programmed to launch simultaneously with the alarm and fly the shortest route to the incident site, providing live imagery to command staff while emergency crews are still en route.

Equipped with both standard and thermal imaging cameras, the drone can survey damage areas and access locations that are difficult for personnel to reach. The captured data is intended to be transmitted directly into the fire department's digital command system. This technology aims to assist leadership in making early decisions regarding the deployment of additional rescue resources, personnel, or other authorities during time-critical situations.

While the flight is automated, it is not without human oversight. An external pilot must authorize the launch and monitor the flight from a flight control center.
