Gladiolin antibiotic identified as potential weapon against fungal infections

Researchers from Monash University in Australia and the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom have identified a potential new method to combat deadly fungal infections. The study focuses on the antibiotic gladiolin, which has been shown to alter the behavior of Candida albicans.

Rather than attempting to kill the fungus directly, gladiolin disarms it by changing its metabolism. This process forces the fungus to consume glucose more rapidly, causing it to revert from its aggressive, tissue-damaging form back into a less harmful yeast state.

According to lead author Professor Anna Traun, this mechanism could prevent the fungus from penetrating human tissue and forming drug-resistant biofilms. This discovery suggests that natural bacterial molecules like gladiolin could enhance existing antifungal treatments, potentially allowing for lower, less toxic doses of medication to be used in clinical settings.
