Gladsaxe Mayor Serdal Benli proposes hijab ban in schools

Serdal Benli, the Socialist People's Party (SF) Mayor of Gladsaxe, has proposed several strict measures regarding immigration and religious practices in his new book, “Men tillykke til Serdal”. Among his proposals is a ban on hijabs and fasting in public primary schools.

Benli argues that the use of headscarves by young children, specifically those in the 3rd and 4th grades, may be a result of social control and cultural dogmatism rather than free choice. He stated that children should be allowed to be children and should not be carriers of reactionary gender views or cultural norms within the public community.

Social Democrat Frederik Vad has publicly supported Benli's stance, stating, “You are not a racist.” Vad argued that the discussion involves issues of gender roles and social control, citing examples such as gender segregation in swimming pools and the covering of schoolgirls as problems that should not be overlooked.
