Gladys Knight to scale back performances amid health concerns

R&B legend Gladys Knight, 82, has announced she will be scaling back her live performances to focus on her family and new personal projects. In a social media statement, Knight explained she is transitioning into the next stage of her career and life, expressing a desire to spend more time with her husband, William McDowell, and her grandchildren.

The decision follows public concern regarding Knight’s recent stage presence. Fans and media outlets noted instances where the singer appeared disoriented or exhausted during shows, including a July performance at the Hollywood Bowl and an August concert in Detroit. While some observers speculated about cognitive health, Knight and her representatives have previously dismissed such claims, with Knight stating she is “healthy and happy.”

Knight clarified that she is not retiring, as she still has scheduled appearances through November. Her husband, who also manages her, noted that they plan to explore medical evaluations to address any health concerns. The announcement also follows past allegations from Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson, regarding the impact of her touring schedule on her well-being, which Knight has firmly rejected.
