Gladys Wanga commissions oncology center in Homa Bay
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has shared her personal experience of battling cancer for the past 12 years. Speaking during the commissioning of the Phoebe Asiyo Oncology Center at the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital, Wanga recounted the emotional impact of her diagnosis on her family.
Wanga credited her mental resilience to encouragement from Senator Beth Mugo, a cancer survivor, who told her, “it is your mind that will kill you, not the cancer.” The Governor noted that during her diagnosis, she was serving as a Member of Parliament, which provided her with the necessary resources to access medical care.
The new oncology center is intended to improve local healthcare access, ensuring residents do not have to travel long distances for specialized care. Plans for the facility include the introduction of chemotherapy and radiotherapy services to support patients within the county.
