The state prosecutor’s office estimates that a criminal cell linked to the Manzo case extorted avocado and lemon producers for up to 18 billion pesos a year. Recent coordinated operations by the Michoacán Attorney General’s Office, state police, the National Guard and the army have captured several high‑value targets, which officials say will cut organized‑crime revenues by roughly 28 billion pesos annually.

These actions coincide with a sharp decline in homicides: a 31 percent drop in the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, and a reported 77 percent reduction from the 2021 peak. To protect the avocado supply chain, more than 1,500 military personnel have been deployed to key production zones.
