Glance report shows streaming market shifting toward catalog content
A new report from the French research firm Glance indicates that the streaming video on demand (SVOD) market has entered a maturity phase, characterized by a shrinking pipeline of new original content and a blurring line between traditional broadcasters and digital platforms.
Data presented at the MIPCOM conference in Cannes shows that new content production is declining across the media landscape. Between January and September 2026, new linear TV series fell by 12%, while Netflix saw a 12% decrease in new content and Disney+ experienced a 41% drop. To compensate for these shrinking pipelines, streaming platforms are increasingly expanding their catalogs through partnerships with broadcasters, such as Netflix’s collaboration with TF1+ and Prime Video’s addition of content from M6+ and France.tv.
The report also highlights a shift in content strategy toward live events and established hits. In the scripted sector, exports from the U.S., U.K., France, and Turkey drive 60% of the market, with a focus on ecological dramas and crime stories. Meanwhile, unscripted formats are evolving toward hybrid courtroom shows, survival competitions, and creator-led video podcasts.
