Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games boosts Scottish athletics legacy and volunteer involvement

Scottish Athletics chief executive Colin Hutchison says the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games have created a strong legacy for the sport in Scotland. He points to the continued growth of the Club Together programme, which has raised club membership by about 65 % and helped develop athletes and coaches. Hutchison notes that the success of the 2014 Games already produced a record‑size Scottish contingent at the Rio Olympics, and the 2026 event is expected to inspire the next generation.

Volunteer chair Emma Gunn recounts her experience as team leader for equipment at Scotstoun Stadium during the Games. She oversaw the transport and safety checks of implements, including record‑breaking hammers, and managed a team of volunteers. Gunn says the role gave her valuable experience and will help her recruit more volunteers for Scottish Student Athletics in future seasons.
