Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games face logistical and modernization critiques
The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow featured athletes from 74 nations and territories competing across 10 sports for 1,168 medals. The event engaged over 630,000 people through venues and festivals, supported by more than 4,000 volunteers.
While the Games showcased high-level competition in events such as the men’s mile, the event faced logistical and structural criticisms. Observers noted that the lack of a purpose-built athlete village required competitors to be spread across 18 different hotels. Additionally, issues were raised regarding the high cost of accommodation and a lack of dedicated media transport, which some suggested allowed hotels to exploit media representatives from smaller Commonwealth nations.
There is also growing discussion regarding the need for the Games to modernize its program. Despite advancements in gender equality and para sports, the event has yet to incorporate esports or digital sports. This is noted as a significant omission given that approximately 60% of the 2.7 billion people within the Commonwealth are under the age of 30, with digital participation rising rapidly across Africa, South Asia, and the Caribbean.
