Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games: Nigeria leads Africa, while several athletes go missing

Nigeria emerged as the top African nation at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, winning 24 medals – 10 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze – and finishing ahead of South Africa in the continental medal table. President Bola Tinubu and broadcaster Adesina Ayooluwa praised the team’s performance despite a reduced programme and a slight drop in gold medals compared with the 2022 Birmingham edition.

After the closing ceremony, police Scotland reported that four Ugandan boxers – Nuhu Batte, Angel Katushabe, Ibrahim Kemis and Emily Nakalema – and Pakistani boxer Qudratullah were unaccounted for. Authorities believe the athletes may be seeking asylum in Scotland, echoing previous instances of competitors disappearing during Commonwealth Games events.
