Glasgow care worker Andrew Johnston removed from register after heroin conviction

Andrew Johnston, a care worker employed by Glasgow City Council, was convicted at Glasgow Sheriff Court on 16 March 2024 of supplying diamorphine (heroin) and was also found in possession of cocaine. In June 2024 he evaded police, driving at excessive speed and failing to stop, prompting a high‑speed chase. The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) investigated his conduct and, after learning he had not disclosed the police charges, issued a removal order on 4 August 2026 that struck him off the care register. The regulator said his actions showed “no insight, regret, and apology” and posed “significant public protection concerns”.

The SSSC stated that any other sanction would be insufficient given the seriousness of the offences and the breach of professional standards.
