Glasgow Central Station Fully Reopens Ahead of Commonwealth Games

On Friday, Glasgow Central Station reopened all its entrances, four months after a fire that destroyed a neighbouring Victorian building on Union Street. The Union Street and Gordon Street entrances, closed since the March 8 blaze, opened to pedestrians and vehicles at 1 pm, completing the station’s recovery ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

The fire began in a vape shop, causing the building to collapse and later be demolished. Glasgow City Council stabilised the remaining gable, removed scaffolding and appointed architects O'Donnell Brown to develop a “meanwhile use” for the site over the next four years. Deputy First Minister Jenny Gilruth said the government had provided up to £10 million in support to affected local businesses.

Network Rail Scotland’s managing director Liam Sumpter and ScotRail’s Phil Campbell praised the rapid work by council, contractors and rail staff, noting the station is now ready to handle the influx of visitors for the Commonwealth Games starting next week.
