Glasgow emerges as a European leader in small satellite industry
Glasgow has emerged as a European leader in the production of small satellites, specifically CubeSats, which are modular units often measuring 10cm cubes. This industry growth is linked to the efforts of entrepreneur Craig Clark, who founded Clyde Space in 2005.
Clark is described as an ‘anchor entrepreneur’ who helped integrate local academic expertise, such as research from the University of Dundee and the University of Strathclyde, with commercial interests. His initiatives helped foster a cohesive space industry in Scotland, which previously lacked a unified commercial sector despite having existing research capabilities.
Key milestones in the region's development include the 2014 launch of the UKube-1 satellite project and the establishment of the US-based company Spire Global in Glasgow. These developments helped transition the region from a shipbuilding heritage to a modern hub for space technology and data collection.
